Pet custody cases present in more divorces

Posted on March 8th, 2012 No Comments

Divorce cases regarding custody of pets are growing in number in the United States. This increase can be largely attributed to separations in domestic partnerships and same-sex marriages. These individuals may take one another to court in order to gain custody of their pets, because they may not have children.

Pets are considered to be family members more often than they were in the past, and people are willing to fight for their company. If children are involved in the custody battle, pets are often placed with them in the decision.

Visitation rights for an animal are not included in any law, so grounds for those cases are still largely unchartered. Couples have to agree on visitation rights among one another in order to approve an arrangement.

If you have questions regarding custody cases, please contact the Austin custody lawyers of Slater, Kennon & Pugh Ltd.LLP  by calling 512-472-2431 today.

Warrant issued for non-custodial father who took daughter

Posted on February 21st, 2012 No Comments

Police in San Marcos recently issued a warrant for a non-custodial father who ran away with his 3-year-old daughter. According to the girl’s family, the father picked up the girl on January 15 for visitation. However, he never returned, and the family believes he ran away to Mexico with her.

Although the man is the 3-year-old’s father, by taking her for longer than he is allowed under his current child custody agreement, he is in violation of previously decided upon child custody orders. A number of factors are taken into consideration when determining custody, including parents’ availability and job status. Factors like these can change often, and as a result, parents can always seek modification of their child custody agreement.

Details of Katy Perry/Russell Brand divorce settlement released

Posted on February 13th, 2012 No Comments

Last week, the details of a divorce settlement between 27-year old pop singer Katy Perry and 36-year old actor and comedian Russell Brand were made public. Documents from the divorce settlement were filed at a court in Los Angeles last Tuesday.

Perry had requested that Brand not receive spousal support, considering her estimated $70 million worth and his $20 million worth. Documents show that Brand will indeed not be receiving alimony from Perry.

Brand filed for divorce in December 2011, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The couple’s settlement was described as a “comprehensive written settlement of all issues.” Both Perry and Brand signed the settlement, signifying an uncontested divorce.

Parents on MTV’s ‘Teen Mom’ negotiate child support

Posted on February 6th, 2012 No Comments

19-year old mother and star of MTV’s “Teen Mom” television series Kailyn Lowry is in negotiations with her ex-boyfriend over child support after moving out with their 2-year old son Isaac.  Lowry’s ex, Jonathan “Jo” Rivera, can also been seen on the TV show.

Lowry is seeking child support from Rivera, who–according to an episode that aired last month–is not happy about it.  According to the teen mom, Rivera’s monthly child support payments of $470 are high, but reasonable, considering that she is unable to work because she takes care of their son everyday.  In the episode, Rivera says that almost half of his monthly income is spent on child support.

The child’s father says he will go to court to modify their current child support agreement.  Lowry noted that Rivera still lives with his parents, and that besides child support, his only other monthly expense is his car payment.

If you or someone you know is in disagreement with an ex about child support, contact the Austin support agreement modification lawyers of Slater, Kennon & Pugh Ltd. LLP by calling 512-472-2431 today.

Halle Berry’s request for sole custody denied

Posted on January 31st, 2012 No Comments

Last week, Halle Berry’s request for sole custody of her 3-year old daughter Nahla was denied by a court in Los Angeles.  The actress, 45, had requested that her ex-boyfriend and her daughter’s father, 36-year old model Gabriel Aubry, be prevented from having any contact with their child.

Instead, on Friday, the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services asked that Aubry attend anger management classes, and he agreed.  The department’s request comes after a nanny for Aubry reported to Berry and police that he had pushed her while she was holding 3-year old Nahla.  Aubry faces charges of child endangerment and battery.

Friday, department officials also recommended that both Aubry and Berry attend parenting classes to help them learn how to better co-parent, and that Nahla begin counseling sessions, before they determine custody.  The couple was due back in court yesterday to hopefully settle their child custody case.

Heidi Klum and Seal separate after 7 years of marriage

Posted on January 24th, 2012 No Comments

Last week, model and television host Heidi Klum, 38, and singer Seal, 48, announced that they have separated after 7 years of marriage.  Together, the two have raised 4 children–1 from Klum’s previous marriage, and 3 of their own.

Sources close to the couple said that Klum has decided to file for divorce because of her husband’s inability to control his temper.  Seal, who is currently promoting a new album, Soul 2, says in interviews that he and Klum remain very close and intend to end their marriage and continue to raise their children amicably.

A statement from the couple reads, “While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate.  We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart.”

Divorce finalized in Texas for Beyonce’s parents

Posted on January 10th, 2012 No Comments

Two years after initially filing divorce papers in Texas, singer Beyonce Knowles’s parents are officially divorced.  The couple lived in Houston, and Beyonce’s father managed her career, while her mother worked as her and her Destiny’s Child bandmates’ stylist.

Tina, 57, and Mathew Knowles, 60, were married for 31 years, but separated in 2009 when Tina learned that Matthew had fathered a child with another woman.  Mathew Knowles denied that the child was his, but paternity tests taken after the child’s birth in February 2010 proved that he is.  Later, sources revealed that Mathew Knowles had an 18-month affair with former “Scrubs” actress Alexsandra White, the child’s mother.

Tina filed for divorce a month after learning of the child.  However, the case was dropped because both Tina and Mathew failed to appear for a court date.

Tina Knowles subsequently refiled for divorce in August 2011.

To speak with an experienced family law attorney about ordering a paternity test, contact the Austin paternity test lawyers of Slater, Kennon & Pugh Ltd.LLP by calling 512-472-2431 today.

No prenup for Katy Perry and Russell Brand

Posted on January 5th, 2012 No Comments

Actor/comedian Russell Brand, 36, filed for divorce from pop star Katy Perry, 27, last Friday but more buzz appears to be circulating around their non-existent prenuptial agreement.

According to Forbes Magazine, Perry earned an estimated $45 million in the 14 months the two were married.

Brand made much less, pulling in around $6 million to $8 million. The two were married in a private ceremony in India in October 2010 but are legally married in California.

According to California law, divorcing spouses without a prenuptial agreement must split their assets 50/50. That means Brand could walk away with more than $20 million. The two also reportedly own a $6.5 million mansion in Los Angeles that will be included in their divorce proceedings.

If you are concerned about protecting his or her property in the eventuality of a divorce, contact the Austin prenuptial agreement lawyers of Slater, Kennon & Pugh Ltd.LLP, today at 512-472-2431.
