Martin Luther King Day is being celebrated on The University of Texas at Austin and Huston-Tillotson campuses today.  Events in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. were organized by the Austin Area Heritage Council.

The celebration began at 9 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. statue on UT Austin’s East Mall.  Event participants heard speeches and performances before beginning the celebration’s march to the State Capitol.  The march was led by The University of Texas at Austin’s African and African Diaspora Studies Department’s chair, Edmund T. Gordon.

After hearing a performance by the Greater Mount Zion Church Choir at the Capitol, the march continued to Huston-Tillotson University.  Austin area residents are encouraged to attend a festival occurring at the campus from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  In addition, organizers of the event ask participants to bring nonperishable foods to be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank.

The Palmer Events Center hosted the Coats for Kids distribution day this weekend.

 Before the sun came up on Saturday morning, families began lining up to enter the center.

The 25th annual Coats for Kids distribution day provided more than 33,000 new and gently used coats to teens and children in Central Texas.  The event also featured a community health fair.

Community members and volunteers with Coats for Kids were asked to donate coats to be distributed to families in need in the area.  Last year, 35,157 coats were distributed and more than 2,600 volunteers and members of the community helped with the event.
