How Divorce Affects Children
We know that divorce can be hard on kids, many more of us as adults experienced this phenomenon as children as the divorce rate climbed in America. However, as adults we may not remember what it is like to have our parents divorce or what is going on the heads of our own children. This is why it is so important to understand what is going on with our children so we can be better support for our children in their time of need.
First, as a divorcing parent you need to not only understand what your child is feeling, but what they are confused about, what they fear, and how they feel about the future.
Many children feel that they are to blame for a divorce, which is the first thing you need to need to explain to your children. Children are not dumb, if you tell them that you or your spouse just don’t get along, they won’t buy it. You need to get into more detail, as painful as it might be, you need to tell them the truth.
Children fear change, just like most adults, but unfortunately for children, they cannot really change their situation. Building a schedule that is consistent with lots of built in support is the best thing you can do for your children.
