Handling a Divorce: Support Groups

If your marriage is ending, it is a difficult time. Often, many of the friends you would have turned to for support do not want to appear to choose sides between the two parties of the divorce. Despite this, it is still important to receive support from somewhere. With the increase in the number of divorces, more and more divorce support groups have sprung up.

Divorce support groups provide support and stability in difficult times. Just like support groups for other areas, they provide a circle of friends that have all experienced the exact same things and are all at various stages of the divorce process. Someone may be almost at the end of the road while another person might just be starting. People in various stages of the divorce process contribute different things.

Divorce support groups can be run by anyone. A common place is through a person’s church. Though many divorce support groups are run by churches, they are generally non-denominational. They are often listed in the phone books under such topics as “counseling”, “divorce”, “therapy”, and “mental health services”. Your divorce attorney should also be able to recommend a support group. Also, calling a friend to find out which support group he or she attended is equally helpful.

A support group should be joined as soon as there is talk of separation. This will allow you to have a support group in place the second a divorce is decided upon. The first few meetings that you attend are certain to be emotional. The support group you attend will have people of varying levels of education but will all have the common thread of divorce to hold you together.
