American Divorce Rates
There has been much talk made about the failure of the American family after the 1950s. The fact of the matter is that some people rush into marriages, some people realize the person they are married to is not the right person for them, or both people have changed so much from the time when they were married that they have nothing in common anymore. Life happens as it will, despite our efforts to control it, and divorce is just another part of life for many people who do not want to be married to their spouse any longer.
When looking at the actual numbers we see that there is a distribution of divorce over many age groups. The highest divorce rates among men and women are between 20 – 24 years of age. If you get married in this age group you have a 30-40% chance that the marriage will end in divorce. As people get married later in life, the divorce rate drops significantly.
One must also keep in mind that those who get divorced once are much more likely to get divorced again. These second and third marriages are the ones that also get counted in the divorce rates, and can skew the numbers slightly higher than that number of people who are actually getting divorced.
