Alimony and Child Support
Alimony is in no way a form of child support. It is sometimes called spousal support, and does fall into the category of child support. Alimony is a legal obligation established in court for each spouse to support the other. While it is generally the husband who is obligated to pay alimony, it is possible for the wife to have to pay the husband.
Post-marital alimony can also be granted in some cases. This, however, is not necessarily in the same amount as the alimony received before the divorce.
Child support is a similar legal obligation. This is the situation in which a non-custodial parent must make periodic payments to the custodial parent or other legal guardian. This is often the result of a divorce or separation.
The two are treated differently. Alimony is considered a source of income, and is taxable. It is also deducted from the income of the paying spouse. Child support, on the other hand, does not affect taxes. It is viewed instead as a payment made by a parent for the support of his or her own children.
Alimony and child support can be very important to the livelihood of a spouse and the growth of a child.
